Marimekko is turning 70 years old

Get inspired by a creative take on the iconic design

The legendary Finnish design house Marimekko, which is best-known around the world for its art of printmaking, will turn 70 years old this year. To celebrate the milestone, Marimekko has invited fascinating creatives around the world to do their take on the brand’s unique design language and philosophy. The result is the Marimekko Co-created, which highlights four different limited-edition capsules of ready-to-wear and home items with seasonal collections.

70 Years of the Art of Printmaking

The first capsule collection of 2021 was created in collaboration with award-winning Finnish designers Antti Kekki and Matts Bjolin.

The limited-edition capsule combines the iconic Maija Isola prints: Unikko (poppy), Kivet (stones), and Lokki (seagull) with Marimekko’s founder Armi Ratia’s quotes and archive photographs from three decades into a heritage-inspired collage with a contemporary edge.

As portrayed on the image carousel, the co-created ready-to-wear pieces feature patchwork and a variety of print techniques such as velvet flocking and embroidery.

The capsule collection also includes sneakers and home items. While the sneakers are made with a recycled sole material, the home items continue the idea of collaging in simplistic yet highly elegant mugs, trays, and home textiles.

The full capsule will be available for purchase from Marimekko’s web store and a few selected retailers starting on Tuesday 2.2.2020.

Meet the creatives

Antti Kekki is a Helsinki-based graphic designer, illustrator and surface designer. He enjoys bold colors, improvisations and handicraft. Antti’s works usually rely on a simple collage technique in which different forms are cut from paper and carefully arranged in playful ensembles.

Matts Bjolin is an art director and multi-disciplinary designer based in Helsinki. He often finds inspiration from fashion and pop-cultural phenomena. Matts appreciates surprising and contrasting juxtapositions both in his work and leisure, sharing his time between the city and the remote countryside.

These two Finnish fashion scene heavyweights complement each other really well. Antti’s skill of using different colors and patterns, Mats’ skill of making fits look effortless and Marimekko’s famous prints look like a match made in heaven.
