Studio TW Created the Ultimate Football Tee
The NFL Super Bowl is here for the 55th time with the Kansas City Chiefs playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. EA Sports came together with the NFL for a special collaboration with Studio W, which features hand-drawn graphics on a souveneir T-shirt.
We tracked down the designer behind the collaboration, Tom Winslade from Studio W for a quick interview.
In your own words, who are you and what do you do?
In the most simplified sense, I’m a multidisciplinary creative working in direction and design; but more broadly my work is about the visual communication of ideas. Under STUDIO TW, we provide brand communication and design solutions.
What are some of your favorite projects from the past?
A favourite project of mine would have to be IN___SIGHT – a docufilm series created by STUDIO TW that captures the perspective of creative individuals. More recently, this Super Bowl project has been great fun to work on.
How did this collaboration take place?
I was approached by the team after they discovered my print graphic archive via Instagram They were looking for a graphic artwork that captured the spirit of the Super Bowl, and considering I’ve created hundreds graphics for print before, they felt like they could trust me to deliver something special for the occasion.
The collection features big prints, which have a vintage feel – did you take inspiration from old Super Bowl archives?
I looked through the Super Bowl archives as a starting point for context, but I also researched vintage band merchandise and graphic T-shirts from my own collection to inspire the art direction, as well as applying my own design style.
Can you break down the design for us?
I illustrated the majority of the artwork by hand and worked textures into all of the elements so that it would have that vintage feeling when printed. Conceptually, I wanted to capture a ‘big moment’ in the game, so I layered up the three-colour palette to convey the energy of player suddenly breaking away at speed.
What is your favorite team in the league and does it reflect in your design?
I don’t follow a particular NFL team, but I do enjoy watching American sports in general; especially the NBA. Here in London, it’s tough to tune in live for games due to the time zones, but as a Brooklyn Nets fan I’m making the effort to catch as many games as possible this season!
Who is going to win the big game?
It’s hard to bet against Tom Brady, especially with the big game being in Tampa – but I think Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs could cause an upset tonight.
